Probably my most favorite FKR rules set

I wrote Ten Thousand Buddha Palms in 2016. Then, it was called “Eight Buddha Palms”, and I blame worldwide inflation for the name change 😉

We had been experimenting for a long time with pre-D&D rules, and 2d6 was our go-to. But, being a die-hard fan of Hong Kong, Bollywood and Korean action movies, I felt I needed an even quicker system: no math (not even addition), one die, higher is better. This is how Ten Thousand (or Eight) Buddha Palms was born. I like its mechanism a lot: roll a die. That die has more sides the more skilled your character is. The opposing side (either an npc, or a difficulty) does the same. Higher result wins. This can be as granular as you like.

So, whenever we have access to the typical funny dice that regular rpgs offer, we use the TTBP core rules. When we don’t, we roll 2d6 vs. 2d6.

The beauty of this system is that you can represent everything with a single die. A private detective who has seen better days trying to defend himself in a bar brawl: d6. A combat monster: d12. That mecha that woke up one day knowing it’s alive: d20. No addition. No math. Just the number you rolled with your die.

  1. During some of my HK action oriented solo adventures, I’ve been using “d6, try for low” a lot and I just can’t stop smiling when I roll a 1. It means the I shot the enemy right in the face or I place a nice kick in the stomach strong enough to make him fly.
