Creating old school-adjacent characters for Index Card RPG

I didn’t see that one coming. I really didn’t. I had sworn off Index Card RPG a while ago because I hated its equipment=powers approach. And suddenly, out of the blue, I’m interested in it again.

“Character builds” are still my archenemy, though. So let’s take ICRPG and randomize it.

ICRPG lets you distribute 5 points among eleven stats

  1. STR
  2. DEX
  3. CON
  4. INT
  5. WIS
  6. CHA
  7. Armor
  8. Basic Effort (manual labor, unarmed)
  9. Weapon Damage
  10. Magic Effect (increases spell power)
  11. Ultimate Effort (added to effort or damage if you roll a nat20)

I roll a d12 five times and add a +1 to the stat I rolled, and reroll if a 12 shows up:

  1. STR
  2. DEX
  3. CON
  4. INT
  5. WIS
  6. CHA
  7. Armor +1
  8. Basic Effort
  9. Weapon Damage +1 +1
  10. Magic Effect (increases spell power) +1 +1
  11. Ultimate Effort (added to effort or damage if you roll a nat20)

Now, on to the “classes”. There are 9 of them in ICRPG’s fantasy setting. I roll a d10, and reroll if I get a 10:

  1. Guardian
  2. Blade
  3. Shadow
  4. Archer
  5. Priest
  6. Scout
  7. Mage
  8. Commander
  9. Wildling

I rolled the Shadow class – a thief:

Footpads, Hoods, and Thieves use stealth as their weapon. They prefer the company of darkness, place little value on law and order, and above all else, trust dagger and cape above friend or kin.

Recommended Gear:
Greedy Gloves, Weapons Kit, Trapper Gear, Pouch of Coin

Starter Reward:
Thief’s Hood (Stealth rolls are always EASY)

ICRPG

Now, I’m rolling for the “bioform”, or what’s commonly called “races” in old school games. There are 5 of them in ICRPG. I roll a d6, and reroll if I get a 6.

  1. Elfkind
  2. Dwarves
  3. Small Folk
  4. Humans
  5. Hill Folk

It’s an Elf. This is what ICRPG says about them:

Highborn from the age of immortals, beautiful, graceful, and elegant with ages…but tainted with an ancient legacy of betrayal.
DEX +1, INT +1

ICRPG

Every character starts with one heart (worth 10 hp).

So, this is my randomly created Elven Thief/Shadow:

STR 0, DEX +1, CON 0, INT +1, WIS 0, CHA 0
❤️
Armor 11 – regular clothes (target number for enemies to hit me)
Basic Effort: d4
Weapon Damage d6+2
Magic Effect (increases spell power) d8+2
Ultimate Effort d12

Greedy Gloves: Any time you roll for LOOT, roll TWICE. Get double the LOOT!
Weapons Kit: Dagger, Short Sword, Short Bow
Trapper Gear: Snares, Tackle, Tent
Pouch of 50 Coins
Thief’s Hood (Stealth rolls are always EASY)

If I wanted to convert this character to OD&D, Delta style, I’d simply give him 6 hp and a +1 to hit. I’d keep equipment and effort:

STR 0, DEX +1, CON 0, INT +1, WIS 0, CHA 0
6 hp
AAC 11
Basic Effort: d4
Weapon Damage d6+2
Magic Effect (increases spell power) d8+2
Ultimate Effort d12

Greedy Gloves: Any time you roll for LOOT, roll TWICE. Get double the LOOT!
Weapons Kit: Dagger, Short Sword, Short Bow
Trapper Gear: Snares, Tackle, Tent
Pouch of 50 Coins

Thief’s Hood (Stealth rolls are always EASY)
